Dusk
Getting in the middle of former lovers didnât seem like a fun idea. Dusk almost wished his walk had taken longer. He had no place in this conversation, or even hearing it.
Conversation? More akin to a verbal walk across heated coals, nails, and broken glass. Kent certainly acted pained enough. His olive skin had an unhealthy ashen hue to it. His eyes were filled with so much anguish; Dusk couldnât stop from putting his opinion into the mix.
âMaybe you should take off?â
âI donât know what shack you crawled out of, but you can drag yourself back now.â Spencer hadnât budged an inch, despite Kent trying to herd him outside. âWhy should I leave?â
âTrespassing laws?â Dusk offered absently. He smirked behind his maple bacon donut when twin glares were aimed at him. âWhat? Itâs true. Did you invite him inside?â
âTechnically? Yes,â Kent grimaced. âI thought it was you. The invitation has been revoked.â
âThat only works on vampires.â Dusk gestured to Spencer with the remaining chunk of his donut. âOpen wide. Letâs see those shiny teeth. Can you eat garlic?â
âDo you mind? This was a private conversation until you rudely cut in.â Spencerâs eyes narrowed on him before turning to his former spouse. âCouldnât we speak privately?â
âNo.â Kent caught his ex-husband by the arm to march him outside. âIâm done talking.â
Leaving the divorcés to handle their business, Dusk stayed in the kitchen to make a pot of coffee to go with the donuts remaining in the bag. He studiously avoided eavesdropping on the raised voices coming from outside. Donât need to know. Iâve no dog in the fight.
Kent stormed inside after several loud, long minutes, rubbing his forehead vigorously with his fingers and muttering to himself. âIâm so sorry.â
Dusk waved off the apology. âFor what?â
âForcing this train wreck of a morning on you?â
âHurricane Spencer blew in with high winds, flooding of the mouth, and emotional destruction.â Dusk earned a barely there smile for his attempt at a joke. âMaybe heâs more of an earthquake or tidal wave?â
âSinkhole.â Kent collapsed into one of the newly painted and reupholstered chairs, accepting the fresh coffee handed to him with a grateful sigh. âWe used to be so happy together.â
âPeople who marry usually are.â
âHeâs broke.â Kent bent forward until his head rested on the table. âBroke. He squandered or simply lost two decadesâ worth of my legacy. And now? He has the balls to ask for more? Heââ
âScrewed you over?â
The generally stoic, gray-haired builder broke off abruptly. Kent uttered one hoarse curse. It sounded as if it had been ripped forcefully from his gut. As Dusk watched him with growing concern, his shoulders started to tremble slightly. He punched the table once, covering up a heart-wrenching sob
Ahh, shit.
What am I doing?
His expertise in dealing with injured creatures tended toward those with four legs and furâthe odd bird and reptile as well. Human hurts, particularly the non-visible ones, were often significantly harder to heal. No amount of sweet treats or bad jokes would solve this one.
In his experience, the trouble with dealing with a broken heart started with rushing the process.
